Nestled within the breathtaking landscapes of AlUla, Sharaan Nature Reserve is a sanctuary of spectacular natural beauty. Encompassing 1,540 km², the Sharaan Nature Reserve aims to protect and rejuvenate the rich biodiversity of AlUla’s canyons, valleys, and deserts. It is a pivotal step towards rebalancing fragile ecosystems, preserving native species such as gazelles, the Arabian oryx, and the acacia woodlands, and fostering sustainable coexistence. 

Chosen for its diverse desert habitats and historical significance, within the Sharaan Nature Reserve, the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) is on a mission to reverse the effects of overgrazing and habitat degradation. It’s a place where conservation meets beauty, working to restore the power of nature’s balance.

The Sharaan Nature Reserve implements habitat restoration techniques and boundary fencing to support the recovery of native vegetation and fauna, aligning with AlUla’s commitment to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. By reintroducing indigenous species and enforcing restrictions on hunting and camel grazing, our team of trained rangers ensures the reserve is managed to global standards while providing employment opportunities for local communities. Through collaborative efforts with stakeholders and the implementation of scientific best practices, we strive to restore the ecosystem’s balance and create a thriving environment for wildlife, ecotourism, and education.

RCU partners with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) on its efforts to restore and monitor AlUla’s nature reserves, including Sharaan. RCU is dedicated to biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, as well as reconnecting communities with nature, which is integral to Bedouin culture. In partnership with the College of African Wildlife Management (CAWM), Mweka, we’re training AlUla community members as rangers for Sharaan Nature Reserve.
